On her, it’s a bold new look; on me, it’s a symbol of my failure to assimilate. On her, it’s unquestionably cool; on me, it’s yet another marker of my Otherness, another thing that makes me different from other American girls. If the use of the bindi by mainstream pop stars made it easier for South Asian women to wear it, I’d be all for its proliferation — but it doesn’t. They lend the bindi an aura of cool that a desi woman simply can’t compete with, often with the privilege of automatic acceptance in a society when many non-white women must fight for it.”

I have confused feelings and thoughts about these things, and am somewhat more supportive of cultural appropriation, especially regarding bindis, than the internet tells me I should be (that said, my family is Bengali and Muslim, and so bindis/tips are largely a fashion choice to begin with, which is probably why I don’t have a strong reaction). Nevertheless, this paragraph hits it home.

Ah, remember the good old days of spending your precious online time on picking out a custom MySpace skin and updating your playlist status on LiveJournal? Xanga, another relic from that same era, is back in the news today with the announcement of a crowdfunding campaign to save the site from shutting down and relaunch itself on the WordPress platform with subscription-based blog hosting. If the site does not raise $60,000 to revamp itself by July 15th, Xanga will be forced to shut down forever. So far, as of 4:30 p.m. (EST), the fundraiser for Xanga 2.0 has raised $1,392 from 12 supporters. Meanwhile, the Xanga team has made their archival tools available to all members to backup their angst-ridden tween blog history, in case the campaign falls through.

If everyone in your culture steps on feet, your culture is horrible, and you need to get off my foot.

If you have foot-stepping disease, and it makes you unaware you’re stepping on feet, you need to get off my foot. If an event has rules designed to keep people from stepping on feet, you need to follow them. If you think that even with the rules, you won’t be able to avoid stepping on people’s feet, absent yourself from the event until you work something out.

The comment is in reference to sexual harassment that occurred at the Readercon convention and the subsequent defense of the situation by some members of fandom and the Readercon Board.

It’s also applicable to other situations where someone claims their intentions were pure and they didn’t mean to do something sexist/racist/heterosexist/abelist, etc. Even if you did not mean to step on someone’s foot—you did.

Notably, because power operates along multiple different vectors simultaneously, people are sometimes both stepping on each others’ feet at the same time. In which case, trying to figure out who stepped on whose foot first is generally less useful than slowing the fuck down and figuring out how to get everyone OFF everyone elses’ feet without anyone toppling over*.

This is the actual, meaningful reason for trying to avoid Oppression Olympics and “Highest Total Oppression Score” calculus. Not because the Arcane Rules of Pop-Social Justice Etiquette require it but because, often, we’re in situations where people have power over us in some ways and we have power over them in others. Those experiences of privilege and oppression interact in complex ways, but they don’t cancel each other out.

If you step on my foot, it is always appropriate for me to respond by saying, “OW. YOU’RE ON MY FOOT.” Especially if my foot has been getting stepped on all day! It’s appropriate for me to expect you to get off my foot and even to apologize. It’s not okay for me to respond by stomping on YOUR foot to make my point. In other words, if you do something misogynistic to me, it’s not cool for me to respond by doing something racist or ableist back.

I know it can be really tempting because, when someone does something that disempowers us, our first impulse as humans is to grab for the places we do have power. But, generally speaking, that means places where we have institutional power over the person who’s hurting us.

* P.S. Bystanders, solving this tricky problem is your job — not the job of the people who are in the middle of going “OW! MY FOOT!” And when I say “bystanders” I mean people like “event organizers,” “party hosts,” “allies,” “educators,” etc. If you want to create safer spaces for people who’ve been disempowered, then you need to be thinking about the fact that some of the ways marginalized people are coping with or resisting oppression will trigger or harm other marginalized people and vice versa.

It’s never as simple as saying, “This particular set of marginalized folks is under protection and anyone who makes them uncomfortable for any reason needs to GTFO.” But it’s not okay to tell that set of folks just to cope with being uncomfortable, either. Be more creative than that.

(FWIW, I don’t know anything about the specific con in question. But this shit is a theme.)

Irene Lee, Girl Detective is a short film by some Carnegie Mellon alums (and non-cmu alums, too). It only needs $175 as of writing to be fully backed on kickstarter. The film has already completed its principle photography, and funds will be used for post-production needs. The film makers are adding a voice often missing from mainstream media - a young, female, asian protagonist. After running the film festival circuit the film makers will be releasing it online for free to reach as wide of an audience a possible.

All funds they receive beyond their goal will go to making post-production even more awesome, with more expensive software, licensing fees, etc.

And if you point out “Okay, if the consequences of my birth control failure/mistake/coerced unprotected sex is pregnancy, I am dealing with it by having an abortion” they have no real response. Try it, and you’ll immediately see an abrupt shift in topic, they won’t address that one head on because they can’t. Because when they say “deal with the consequences” what they really mean is “you will continue this pregnancy and give birth against your will and take it when we shame you as a slutty whore for being pregnant too young/outside of marriage/by a different man than fathered your other child(ren) or as a stupid welfare queen sucking up our money if you’re poor if you choose to keep and raise your child yourself.” There is no winning with people who view pregnancy as a “just consequence” - by which they mean punishment - for people who have sex when they do not wish to have a child.

I just saw an ad for a children’s TV show called “Sally Bollywood: Super Detective” (see an episode here)

Sally Bollywood is a French-Australian animated series which revolves around a young Indian girl, who lives in a town called “Cosmopolis”. Her father, Harry, is a private detective, which inspired Sally to start her own private eye service, S.B.I. (Sally Bollywood Investigations), located in the basement of their family home. She, along with the help of best friend Doowee McAdam, solve cases presented to them usually by children attending their school. Most cases see Sally and Doowee traveling around their local neighbourhood and using technology to help with their numerous investigations.

I like that Sally is dark-skinned, wears a traditional red bindi and a total badass. Sends a cool message to little brown girls growing up in the west.
